The Curly-Coated Retriever is one of the oldest of the retriever breeds, predating the Labrador and Golden Retrievers. Its distinctive tightly curled coat is naturally water-resistant and helps protect it from brambles and icy waters.
The Curly Coated Retriever is a breed of dog originally bred in England who specialized in upland bird and waterfowl hunting. This breed is the tallest of the retrievers and is easily distinguishable by its tight curls which cover its body. The Curly Coated Retriever has a long and proven history of being a solid and loyal family dog.
This breed is a very caring, friendly, and easy to be around dog. They enjoy socializing with other dogs and generally show no signs of aggression. They are loyal to their families and have warm and approachable demeanors. They are smart dogs that train well and do make great family pets much thanks to their loving and outgoing personalities.
The Curly Coated Retriever does well with routine bathing at least one time every four to five weeks. Despite having very curly coats, they do not require excessive amounts of grooming and are easy to maintain. Daily brushing will keep their coats from matting and is always recommended as it will help them look and feel their best. Remembering to keep their nails trimmed should also be a part of their normal care routine.
The Curly Coated Retriever is a moderately active dog and does need ample amounts of energy to feel its best. The correct ratio of meat-based protein and micronutrients, as well as healthy carbs and fats, will keep this breed healthy. Curly Coat Retriever owners recommend feeding this dog two meals a day, spaced about twelve hours apart. It is also very important to remember to provide your dog with proper dental care. It is suggested that his teeth get cleaned a minimum of three times a week. Failing to keep his teeth clean can contribute to health issues.
