About Chorkie

Despite their small size, Chorkies often act fearless and confident, sometimes thinking they’re much bigger than they really are!

History

The Chorkie is a modern designer breed developed to combine the Chihuahua’s bold, spirited nature with the Yorkshire Terrier’s feisty, energetic personality. Chihuahuas, originating from Mexico, are known for their tiny size and confident demeanor. Yorkies, originally bred in England as ratters, are famous for their courage, intelligence, and long silky coats. Crossing these two breeds produced the Chorkie—a small dog with a big personality that thrives as a loyal and loving companion. Chorkies have become increasingly popular due to their charming looks and affectionate temperament.

Personality

Chorkies are energetic, affectionate, and devoted. They love being around their families and enjoy attention, playtime, and cuddles. With the Chihuahua’s confidence and the Yorkie’s spunk, they are often playful, curious, and alert. Their temperament is best described as loyal, intelligent, social, and sometimes a little stubborn. Early socialization and consistent training help them get along well with children and other pets. Despite their small stature, they are bold little dogs with plenty of character.

Appearance

Chorkies are tiny dogs with compact bodies, expressive eyes, and often long, silky coats inherited from the Yorkie parent. Coat colors may include tan, black, brown, cream, or combinations of these shades. Their ears may stand erect like a Chihuahua’s or flop slightly like a Yorkie’s. Regular brushing, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and occasional baths keep their coat healthy and shiny. Their small size, big eyes, and charming expressions make them extremely appealing.

Care

Feeding your Chorkie high-quality dog food appropriate for their size, age, and activity level is important for overall health. Puppies should be fed smaller, frequent meals, while adults usually thrive on two balanced meals per day. Chorkies require moderate daily exercise—short walks, play sessions, and mental stimulation are ideal. Grooming routines include brushing several times a week, occasional baths, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care. Positive reinforcement training is recommended to encourage good behavior and manage their independent streak.

Life Expectancy

Chorkies typically stand 6 to 9 inches tall and weigh 4 to 12 pounds. Their average life expectancy ranges from 12 to 16 years.
