APPEARANCE

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have medium-length hair that’s silky, wavy, and very fine. This is not a hypoallergenic dog breed, however its fine hair is tolerable to some people who suffer from pet allergies.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have distinct markings of colored hair as a mask over their faces and ears and down their backs and tails, while the rest of their bodies are white. Their colored hair can be a combination of at least two of the following colors: black, white, tan, blenheim, or ruby. Some Cavalier King Charles have black or tan hair instead of white.

As a toy-sized breed, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel stands at 12 – 13 inches, paw to shoulder, and weighs about 15 lbs. Contrasting its petite physique and delicate stance are its huge, sweet eyes. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have kind eyes to match their sweet temperament. They also have long, soft, floppy ears that give them a distinctly feminine look. And their wispy, pipe-cleaner tails are the elegant cherry on top of their regal sundae appearance.

TEMPERAMENT

Whether you’re about to be a first time dog owner or you already have dogs and other pets, finding your perfect puppy to fit into your household could take some research. One of the most easy going and adaptable dog breeds is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which is why the pet counselors at Petland Kansas City often recommend Cavaliers to first-time puppy owners, people with other household pets, and people who already have a dog or two.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are playful, gentle, and lovey-dovey. They’re a highly social breed that’s non-territorial. And they get along with everyone they meet! Whether it’s neighbors, visitors, or new members of the family, either human or furry, your Cavalier will love them.

Cavaliers don’t like being left all alone. This is another reason that this dog breed often makes a great addition to pet families. If you have other dogs and / or cats, your Cavalier won’t feel lonely in your absence. When you’re home with your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, you can expect a lot of love, snuggles, and attention. TRAINABILITY

Raising the perfect puppy boils down to puppy training. Some dog breeds are easier to train than others. And so you should take into account how trainable a breed is prior to buying. Luckily, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an easy-to-train dog breed.

Thanks to their lovey-dovey nature, Cavaliers live to please their owners. Start training your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy as soon as you bring him home. With persistence and consistent training, your Cavalier will quickly pick up basic commands. This dog breed responds well to positive reinforcement training, and your praise and pats will be very rewarding.

Interestingly, even though Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are companion lap dogs, they technically belong to the “sporting” group of dogs. This speaks to their instinct and ability to assist their owners in hunting expeditions as well as master agility courses. It takes intelligence, dedication, and loyalty to handle those kinds of complex tasks. And the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel naturally rises to the challenge.

EXERCISE NEEDS

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dog breed is a small dog breed. But it actually has a lot of energy! Cavaliers have moderate exercise needs and require about 1 hour of daily outdoor activity. Running around outside during a game of fetch or going for a jog with you will make your Cavalier happy.

Other ways to exercise your Cavalier include taking your furry friend for a long walk, and going swimming! Cavaliers are proficient swimmers, but you’ll probably have to teach your dog how to swim. Stick to lakes and pools, and never bring your Cavalier into the ocean.

There are many benefits of walking your dog or taking him to the lake. These benefits include bonding with your Cavalier. And you’ll also provide him with the extra exercise he needs to stay healthy!

GROOMING REQUIREMENTS

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have medium-length hair, which is a single coat. Since their hair is prone to tangle, this breed needs to be brushed for about 10 minutes every day. Brushing your Cavalier is a great way to bond with affection, and this breed definitely enjoys being brushed!

One of the most important approaches to grooming your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel throughout its life is to groom and “handle” him regularly during his puppyhood. Dogs that were not handled as puppies will not tolerate grooming. Puppies that have their paws touched and that are handled by “strangers” like the vet tend to be better patients. You can help your Cavalier accept handling by handling him yourself during grooming. Take him to the groomers to get his nails trimmed, and keep all your vet appointments. The vet “handling” your puppy will be good for his overall development!

That being said, you’ll want to bathe and shampoo your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel about once every 12 weeks. Cavaliers are seasonal shedders. Taking your Cav to the groomers to get de-shedded can help keep him from shedding at home.

GENTLE WITH CHILDREN

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are great with children of all ages. They have a gentle, patient temperament with kids. And since they love being pet and adored, they generally enjoy spending time with children. Also, kids can bring out your Cavalier’s playful, frisky side. This can help your Cav to meet its exercise and mental stimulation requirements.

If you have very young children, you’ll need to teach them not to pull the Cavalier’s ears or fluffy tail. Cavaliers that are mishandled by children in this way will grow aloof, avoidant, and standoffish. Children also should be taught to always respect the dog’s food bowl. And they should give the dog plenty of space when it’s meal time.

HARMONY WITH OTHER PETS

If you have other pets, adding a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy to your family shouldn’t be too challenging. As part of puppy training, you should train your Cavalier to respect the other animals. Cavalier puppies that are raised with adult resident dogs will quickly adapt. Likewise, Cavalier puppies will get along with your cats. But you should apply special attention to training your Cavalier puppy. Training should focus on not chasing your cats.

The one caveat with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels hinges on other furry pets and exotics, like rabbits and guinea pigs. As a puppy, a Cavalier can be trained to respect these smaller critters. But you should never leave your Cav alone with them. We don’t recommend that you add more furry friends to your home once your Cavalier is an adult.

Adult-aged Cavalier King Charles Spaniels generally regard new pets as “game.” This could spell trouble. If you want to add more pets to your Cavalier’s home later down the road, you proceed with caution.
